The ‘Skrillex’ Cut And Its Safe Versions. Which Side Are You On?

streetstyle-sidecut-hairstyFeels like it’s been forever since we talked hair, and today being a gloomy Monday (aren’t they all?) I felt we needed to get a bit feisty and take sides both hair wise as well as for the sake of conversation. What’s up for discussion today? The Skrillex Haircut, also going by the name of: sidecut, undercut or simply half shaved hairstyle. Though it’s not a product of the 2013, not even of 2012 actually, when it had its huge boom, this punk meets rock’n roll hairstyle was made famous by pop stars. Read Rihanna, Cassie, Kesha et all. And it was the same Skrillex look Rihanna turned into a trend, that landed her the worst haircut EVER ‘award’ just a while ago. It’s definitely not a look for everyone. Nor to try nor to love on somebody else, but you gotta give kudos to those who pull it off. It takes a certain kind of attitude and confidence, an edgy fun and funky personality and courage to DO IT. High cheekbones, full lips, tiny nose and a high forehead may also help. I’ve noticed the side shaved hairstyle looks amazing on girls with strong yet sweet face features. Oh… and then there’s the job description one might have, as a half shaved hipster look might be a little bit too much if you’re aiming to make partner at a law firm. half-shaved-hairstylesrihanna-half-shaved-hairsidecut-hairstyle-cher-lloydBut if you’re not, and your work is not fashion restrictive, would you do it? Would you be a ‘two-faced-gal‘ hairstyle wise for a few months? Well until that hair grows… Do you have to change your whole style for it? What if you’re invited to a posh cocktail dinner? Well dolls… if these questions do not frighten us, then we might just be the right candidates for this undercut. I mean you definitely needn’t change your look, but the sidecut has to complete your style. And you gotta be able to rock it on all occasions and situations. And you can. Take a few fashion inspo from the pics below. The half shaved hair does not actually look that bad, even on the red carpet. What do you think? cassie-half-shaved-haircassie-half-shaved-style'Battleship' Japan PremiereSONY DSChalf-shaved-hairstyleWhen this haircut received the award for worst hairstyle ever I have to say I was taken aback a little bit because, truth be told… I actually love it and I think – yes it’s way too risky – but it’s got edge and personality. Besides, it’s just hair. It grows back. The less courageous ones, who might either not love this undercut, or be too scared to chop their hair off, but love the sidecuts’s quirkiness found a slight compromise. Well actually 2: the side swept hairstyle & the side cornrows. I honestly think these 2 styles are a safer reinvention of the original, which is fine. I mean, take the side swept hairstyle for example – celebs have been obsessed with it on the red carpet for the past years. Had they gone extreme on this one, we would have had celebrity websites and magazines packed with the Skrillex look on say JLo or Charlize Theron… So sometimes taking the safe road on a look might be the best thing you ever do. Especially if you’ve got a case of chronic indecisiveness. Plus, you have to admit it, the side swept hairstyle is so versatile and it actually fits everyone on any occasion. It can look classy (see Jessica Alba), it can have a twist of edge, it can be cute & sweet, casual or wild. jessica-alba-side-swept-haorcandice-swanepol-side-swept-hairkristen-stewart-side-swept-hairkristen-stewart-side-swept-hair-backmiranda-kerr-side-swept-hairstyleselena-gomez-side-swept-hair70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivalsjennifer-lopez-side-swept-hairrosie-huntington-whitely-side-swept-hairside-swept-hairstylesAnd speaking of cute & wild, if you want to commit to the side swept look for more than just a day/night, yet you’re not ready to say good-bye to your long locks just yet, and you’re aiming for a hipster meets cute look, you might consider the side cornrows. Not a new look in the least, but with the right accessories, makeup and style it can definitely be fashion forward. It’s got that urban wild chic side to it, that I absolutely love. As much as its controversy overshadows this look it is quite versatile and daring and might just be the perfect look if you want to make a statement. Yet keeping it safe may not be such a bad idea after all… Which side are you taking on this one?

Long Hair, Don’t Care!

long-hairstyles-2012On this yet another hectic and we-all-hate-it Monday, I thought we’d talk hair, girls. Actually this is not (only) about long hair, but more importantly, One-Length-Hairstyles or haircuts, be it long or medium. I’m no expert when it comes to hair, actually – good hair and I – don’t fit in the same sentence, but a girl can still dream and hope, and we sure get those haircut obsessions and act on the scissor impulse every now and then. My time has come to do a change. In theory. Practice comes second of course. This one-length-haircut is so on my list right now and I can only think of do’s and pluses when it comes to it. straight-one-length-hairFirst of all, the same length thing is super healthy for your hair and it better protects its ends from splitting. If your hair is dead straight and thick (mine’s just the former d’ohhh) it’d be a shame not to get this cut.

Second of all, it’s quite a trendy cut. I’m starting to see it everywhere, from streets to catwalks and the world wide web. Besides, even if it’s not trendy, it looks so sleek, polished, clean and classy, it’s irresistible. With or without bangs it looks healthy and timeless-retro. It’s got a bit of rocknroll, a bit of preppy vibe, a bit of boho-chic. A bit of whatever you’re like, or wanna feel like.

And third of all, enough with the layered hairstyles! As good as they look and suit just about anyone, for the past years we all look like we’re at a loss of hairstyles, and settle for this once-cool-now-boring cut. How did I get stuck in this un-imaginative and on-everyone-s-head hair trend? Not yet ready to chop off my locks, I will sleek them up though. long-hairstylestraight-one-length-hairlong-straight-hairstraight-one-length-hairone-length-hairstyleslong-hairstyle (2)one-length-hairone-length-straight-hairsleek-one-length-haircutShould we acknowledge the death of layered hairstyles already, and call it a decade or however long it’s been? One length haircuts are by far a new invention, but it’s actually this back to basics and simplicity that have me running off to my stylist to get the sleek hair chop. What do you think? Have we moved on from the layers and if so, where to?

P.S. By next month or even by tomorrow, I might, just might find the layered hairstyles the best. Talk about hair inconsistency or the lack of for that matter…

Braids: One Hair Trend. Infinite Styles.

braidsBehold. The gurus of fashion & hairstyles have officially declared braids the biggest hair trend for 2013 Fall. And probably 2014 Winter, Spring & Summer. Surprised? Well… not really to be honest, because if you ask me, braided hairstyles have never quite left the spotlight. And I wonder why? Could it be because it’s such an effortless way to swing between hairstyles and looks? Or are we again dipping into the childhood memories we still, can’t let go of? So what if we’re in our 20s, 30s or even 40s, who says we can’t still braid the shit out of our hair in the most fun ways possible?

OK, so the braided hairstyles are IN, with so many ways to do this trend, one question still lingers. Can you braid? Or at least can your friends braid? Except for the classic style, I can’t braid for shit. Thank God for my 2 friends, Cristina & July, who master this art at its perfection, and can replicate any crazy idea I have. briaded-hairstyle-fall-2013-trendbriaded-hairstyle-blake-livelybraids-2013-trendWhy is this hairstyle so coveted, though? Well, for starters it has to do with the effortless vibe it sends (it’s not that easy to do but it sure looks like it is) and second it’s about the infinite hairstyles you can get. Not to mention the creative side it holds. From simple braids, high, low, messy, sleek, structured, to the craziest most intricate braids, this hairstyle is perfect for just about any occasion. Celebs are rocking this trend on both the red carpet as in everyday life. Designers chose this hairstyle in their 2013 – 2014 fall winter collections… so why sit aside on this one, girls? briaded-hairstyle (2)briaded-hairstyle-trendStart braiding! It’s boho-chic, it’s Spanish style, Russian style, gypsy style – and it looks amazing. Hair up or down, sleek or disheveled, messy, curly, or wavy – braids are the perfect way to spice up your looks. Not to mention how fabulous it all looks with statement earrings and bold lips! That’s it! I’m gonna try this hairstyle over the weekend. I smell heavy youtube braids tutorials watching! :)

One of my favorite celebs always nailing the Braids Trend is Kourtney Kardashian & Jessica Alba.
